UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa today claimed that party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has entered into a contract with President Mahinda Raapaksa to protect inorder to safeguard his position.
“We do not want a leader who has deals with the President, but we want a leader who has a deal with the public who want to change the government”, Mr. Premadasa said addressing a gathering at Town Hall.
Earlier the supporters of Mr Premadasa was hold a Sathayagraha outside the Sirikotha where the Working Committee of the party is scheduled to meet, but due to a court order the were forced to change the venue.
Supporters of Mr Premadasa claimed that a bag of wasps were thrown from a vehicle towards the crowd, but as they had held the bag the wasps could not get out.
Mr Premadasa said that a sudden decision to carpet the road in front of Sirikotha and thereby close the road and also for the police to obtain a court order preventing holding of demonstrations close to Sirikotha were clear signals that Mr. Wickremesinghe had a 'deal' with the Rajapaksa brothers.
He said that did not want to oust the leader, but want him to retain the Opposition leader post and to appoint Karu Jayasuriya as the leader of the party in a bid to reactivate the party and to win the upcoming local council polls eventually going on to form a government.
MPs Dayasiri Jayasekara, Sujeewa Senasinghe, Buddhika Pathirana, Rosy Senanayake, Ranjith Madduma Bandara were among those present.
Mr. Imithiaz Bakeer Markar who addressed the gathering was introduced as the Mayorl candidate for the Colombo Municipal Council elections.
